Hamrick Software has released a new version of its scanning application for Mac OS X, VueScan. Currently at version 8.5.28, VueScan delivers improvements and support for several scanners, as well as the usual bug fixes for problems with certain scanners.

In addition to improving auto strip film alignment with Nikon film scanners, Hamrick Software was also able to better the auto refresh (only when crop box moved 5% or more), while adding support for Plustek OpticFilm 7400 and Quato Intelli Scan 5000. Resolved issues include problems with Canon scanners on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), a problem with Canon networked scanners on Windows and an issue with crashes when the old version of ASPI was installed.

“VueScan 0.1 was first released in 1998 with support for a single scanner on Windows only. Within 5 years VueScan supported more than 400 scanners and after 10 years of development, VueScan now supports more than 1,200 scanners on 3 operating systems and in 40 languages, has been downloaded more than 5 million times and has been purchased by more than 170,000 people worldwide,” Ed Hamrick, the creator of VueScan, said.

To either try the app, or update to the latest version, download VueScan using the link below. The software will automatically recognize if you've already purchased it. All you need to do is install it over the old version of VueScan. Upgrades are free in the first year after you purchase the Standard Edition. Upgrades are always free if you purchase the Professional Edition. VueScan requirements call for Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) or later, and a supported scanner. VueScan currently supports more than 1,200 different scanners on Windows, 930 on Mac OS X and 580 on Linux. The scanners are organized by vendor name and can be viewed here.
