Hamrick Software has released a new version of its scanning software application for Mac OS X, VueScan. Version 8.5.22 delivers improvements on the PDF compression front, as well as a couple of fixes. The update is free for all existing users, and a recommended one at that.

According to the release notes for VueScan 8.5.22, Hamrick Software has improved PDF compression for text scans, making it easier for users to employ PDF files with the software. VueScan should also be more reliable when users are working with multi-page PDF files. Additionally, owners of Visioneer 680 and DocuMate 632R scanners should be experiencing less hassle.

“VueScan 0.1 was first released in 1998 with support for a single scanner on Windows only. Within 5 years VueScan supported more than 400 scanners and after 10 years of development, VueScan now supports more than 1,200 scanners on 3 operating systems and in 40 languages, has been downloaded more than 5 million times and has been purchased by more than 170,000 people worldwide,” Ed Hamrick, the creator of VueScan, said.

“For the past ten years we've continued to add support for more scanners and we've made thousands of improvements and added hundreds of features that customers have asked for. Since we first released VueScan 8.4 two years ago, we've made more than 600 improvements and it's really changed a lot in this time,” Ed concluded.

To update to the latest version of VueScan, just download the trial version using the link below, and the software will automatically recognize if you've already purchased it. All you need to do is install it over the old version of VueScan. Upgrades are free in the first year after you purchase the Standard Edition. Upgrades are always free if you purchase the Professional Edition. VueScan requirements call for Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) or later and a supported scanner.
