Microsoft refreshed a tool offered to Visual Studio 2010 developers in an effort to streamline asynchronous programming.

The fall of 2010  brought with it the release of Visual Studio Async, and with it, language and framework improvements spanning both C# and Visual Basic and designed to allow devs to get the most out of asynchrony in their projects.

Visual Studio Async has evolved since its introduction, although the tool continues to be offered as a Community Technology Preview through the Microsoft Download Center.

In fact, the evolution unveiled by the software giant involves a Service Pack 1 (SP1) Refresh for Visual Studio Async CTP.

Devs that have been leveraging Visual Studio 2010 are undoubtedly aware that the Redmond company recently released the first upgrade for the tool.

Visual Studio Async CTP SP1 Refresh is designed to be used in tandem with Visual Studio 2010 SP1.

“The original Async CTP from PDC 10 brought asynchronous programming to C# and Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010. This refresh introduces the following:

• Compatible with Visual Studio 2010 SP1, which is now required.

•Compatible with non-English installations of Visual Studio and with Visual Studio Express.

• Enables asynchronous development for Windows Phone 7.

• Includes various bug-fixes and changes, detailed in the Readme and documentation,” Microsoft revealed.

There is an additional change, but at the same time, one that developers will find particularly interesting, even though it’s not related to new features or capabilities.

Microsoft modified the Visual Studio Async CTP SP1 Refresh EULA, providing devs using the tool with the possibility to leverage it into production.

Still, the software giant underlines that “this license does not constitute encouragement for you to use the CTP for your production code. The CTP remains an unsupported and use-at-your-own-risk Technology Preview. However, we’ve received many requests from developers to use the CTP for production code, and so have changed the license to allow that.”
