Berbie has released a new version of its route-planning software application for Mac, TrailRunner. Version 2.1 Build 439 delivers the usual array of improvements and bug fixes, including a better GPX import, an updated Japanese localization, support for iPod 5G Nike+ workout imports, and more.

TrailRunner can display maps and elevation data from web-based mapping services like USGS topo maps, import GPS Recordings from Trails for iPhone, as well as import tracks and workouts from GPS fitness devices like the Garmin ForeRunner or Garmin Edge. Users can describe favorite tracks and rate them with iTunes stars, and plan their routes interactively, or automatically for a given distance. The app also boasts the ability to export route directions onto an iPod, and the ability to journalize workouts in a diary, see progress in a history chart, and, ultimately, publish a WebLog to MobileMe.

New in TrailRunner 2.1 Build 439 are the following changes:

Better: The GPX import now also imports contained way-points; Better: Updated Japanese localization; Better: Added support for iPod 5G Nike+ workout imports; Better: Added topographic openStreetMaps for Massachusetts; Better: Added the openStreetMaps from Freemap Slovakia; Better: Added the openStreetMaps from MTBMap Norway; Bugfix: Fixed an issue where large images for diary entries did not show up after an application restart; Better: Mouse click or two finger gesture scrolling now cancels the map scrolling animation; Better: For better performance, route detouring now produces only routes that are no longer than two times the distance [of] the original route.

Although downloading and using TrailRunner is free, all current releases of TrailRunner will only run for about three months. TrailRunner is still in the pre-release state, therefore users are advised to regularly update to the most current version, as well as review and accept the License Agreement that comes with the application, before using it. TrailRunner versions above 1.6 (including the one available for download today) require Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to run. The only remaining version supported on Tiger is TrailRunner 1.6. TrailRunner is updated on a weekly basis with very few exceptions.
