Pictional LLC have updated their TrueHDR iPhone app to version 2.2, adding geo-tagging features, improved alignment, and enhanced light metering. The app is also on sale - 50% off - for a limited time, Pictional said.

Now purchasable for just one buck, TrueHDR is a tool that allows taking full-resolution HDR (high dynamic range) pictures with your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, or fourth-generation iPod touch.

Although Apple’s iOS 4 software has built-in HDR integrated with the Camera app, some claim that TrueHDR can give superior results.

With TrueHDR, users can get the best of bright and dark areas in a single picture and have them merged automatically into a single picture that is much closer to what your eyes originally saw, Pictional explains.

According to the developer, users of the app will get better HDR results (compared to the iPhone’s Camera app) as it uses state-of-the-art “computational photography techniques.”

Key features include

- Choice of Natural or Enhanced modes, with Natural for the most realistic look and Enhanced for slightly more vivid colors and contrast - pick the look you like - All new Natural mode gives you beautifully natural true-to-life colors, faster processing, and reduced image noise - Easy capture with Rapid AutoCapture mode - Greater control over exposure points with SemiAuto capture mode and manual mode - Automatically saves original images for use with desktop HDR programs if desired - Works on iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4G where the native camera does not offer an HDR option - Full support for front facing camera in all three modes (Auto, SemiAuto, and Manual), making composing and taking self portraits easier and more fun than ever.

As noted above, version 2.2 brings a few enhancements.

Geo-tagging allows users to keep track of where they took their photos with TrueHDR.

“With your permission, TrueHDR now tags photos with location information,” Pictional notes. The feature is identical to Apple’s “Places” function.

Next up, improved alignment. Pictional explains that, thanks to this addition, users will experience fewer ghosted edges, resulting in even crisper, higher quality images.

Finally, enhanced light metering allows the app to better balance between shadow and lighter area in images. Simply put, “you end up with a better range of details in your pictures,” according to the developers.

Interestingly enough, the iTunes description claims that TrueHDR supports Apple’s iPad as well, while the minim iOS version requires is 4.0.
