The distro is now powered by Linux kernel 3.5 and the MATE desktop environment

Lars Torben Kremer announced on December 29, the immediate availability for download and testing of the Release Candidate version of the upcoming Snowlinux 4 operating system.

Dubbed Glacier, Snowlinux 4 is based on the Debian GNU/Linux 7.0 (Wheezy) operating system, it's powered by Linux kernel 3.5, MATE 1.4, and it includes popular apps like Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 17, LibreOffice, Shotwell, Pidgin and Rhythmbox.

"Snowlinux 4 "Glacier" is based upon Debian GNU/Linux 7.0 "Wheezy" and uses Linux 3.5. MATE 1.4 is the default desktop environment and LightDM as new default login manager to replace GDM 3.”

“It was built an own greeter for LightDM. There were introduced much new features like snowMenu, the Snowlinux menu and snowMount, the Snowlinux mount tool for drives," said Lars Torben Kremer, developer of Snowlinux, in the official release announcement.

Recommended hardware requirements for Snowlinux 4:

· An x86 processor; · At least 256 MB memory; · At least 2 GB free disk space; · A graphics card capable of 800x600 resolution; · A CD-ROM drive or USB port.

The Snowlinux 4 (Glacier) operating system is distributed as Live CDs for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. It is 100% compatible with the Debian software repositories and supported with security updates and general patches until 2017.
