Skype, the popular VoIP app now available for iPhone too, has received an update delivering over a dozen enhancements and changes, including the ability to set up call forwarding from your iPhone. Skype is free to download and use on any iPhone or iPod touch model running iPhone OS 2.2 or later.

According to the iTunes App Store listings, Skype version 1.2 lets you forward Skype calls to a phone number when you're not signed in. Improved performance and better audio quality on Skype-to-Skype calls, as well as easier to send text messages (send SMS from the Call tab) are two more noteworthy additions. Calls are also connected much faster now, while the status of your contacts is updated more often. Other changes, according to Skype Software, include:

- You can now decide whether you want to stay online/offline when the iPhone is locked. We've added this into settings. - Contact groups are now supported, making it easier to see who is online and separate your saved phone numbers. - You can now edit the name of your saved phone numbers. - Added support for Skype: URL schemes in Safari. - When creating a new account, the country in your Skype profile is taken from the language used on your iPhone. - Group chat-profile pictures are now shown. - You can now remove your profile picture. - Added a 'Help' link to 'Forgot your password.' - Improved support for proxy configurations.

Skype not only includes free, Skype-to-Skype calls from any Wi-Fi zone to other Skype users worldwide, but also the ability to call landlines or mobile phones at Skype’s great, low rates from any Wi-Fi zone. Skype for iPhone also boasts the capability of sending/receiving instant messages to/from individuals or groups via 3G, Wi-Fi, GPRS or EDGE (whichever is available), as well as the ability to receive calls to a personal, online number on Skype. Seeing when Skype contacts are online/available to IM or talk is also simple with Skype on the iPhone.

Skype for iPhone requires a Wi-Fi connection, in order to make free, Skype-to-Skype calls or low-cost Skype calls to mobiles and landlines. The service is charged only when using Skype to call landlines or mobiles.
