SeaMonkey 2.3, the all-in-one web browsing suite, has been released, hot on the trails of Firefox 6, the latest update to the popular Mozilla browser. Since it's based on Gecko 6, the same layout engine that powers Firefox 6, it shares many of the under-the-hood updates with the world's second most popular browser.

SeaMonkey 2.3 also comes with plenty of bug fixes and patches, but only one notable specific update, some fixes for importing email from Microsoft Outlook.

"The SeaMonkey project is proud to present SeaMonkey 2.3: The new major release of the all-in-one Internet suite is available for download now!," the announcement for SeaMonkey 2.3, the latest update, reads.

"Building on the same Mozilla platform as the newest Firefox release, it delivers the latest developments in web technologies such as HTML5, hardware acceleration and improved JavaScript speed," it continued.

"SeaMonkey 2.3 is available in 24 languages, for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux," it added.

SeaMonkey 2.3 adds support for the revised WebSockets technology which should fix a potential vulnerability from the first version of the protocol. This new draft version is included in Firefox 6 and is supported by recent Google Chrome versions.

The latest update brings support for EventSource and server-sent events, courtesy of Gecko 6. There is also support for window.matchMedia.

Several stability fixes as well as several security fixes are included in SeaMonkey 2.3. Some usability problems left over from SeaMonkey 2.2 have also been fixed.

SeaMonkey 2.3 comes a week after the third beta release. It's on schedule with Mozilla's new rapid release cycle. In fact, this was the first time that all big Mozilla products, Firefox, Thunderbird and SeaMonkey came out on the exact same date.
