14 DAY TRIAL // On Thursday, Norwegian software company Opera Software announced the release of Opera Mobile for Windows, Linux and Mac computers, in an attempt to make the testing of mobile Web an even easier process. Developers can now test mobile websites directly from their computers, and all they need to do is to install the full version of Opera Mobile, as well as the Opera Widgets Mobile Emulator.
According to the company, the new release offers developers the possibility to save both time and money by having Opera Mobile running on desktop, eliminating the need of testing on various mobile phones. Moreover, the solution has been designed to offer developers the possibility to easily resize the application for emulating various screen sizes today's handsets come to the market with.
“Testing mobile browsers usually requires Web developers to buy one or more devices on which they then can investigate how their Web sites perform. The Opera Mobile emulator is designed to make the whole testing effort a bit easier: you install a small, native application on the platform of your choice, and load Web pages from the comfort of your desktop,” the software company states in an Opera Labs blog post.
The Opera Widgets Mobile Emulator was released to offer developers the possibility to test mobile widgets straight from the computer. Not to mention that they can add Opera Dragonfly into the mix, so as to lower the barrier to mobile debugging. Basically, all the testing of web sites and widgets that was previously possible on Windows Mobile or Symbian phones is now brought to desktop computers powered by Windows or Linux, as well as to Mac machines.
“With more people accessing the Web from their phones, optimizing and tweaking Web content for display on phones is increasingly important. By making a version of Opera Mobile available for normal desktop computers, developers are now able to create mobile optimized Web sites and widgets quickly and efficiently, without investing in multiple testing devices,” said Andreas Bovens, Group Leader Developer Relations.
