14 DAY TRIAL // Users running the latest iteration of Windows 7 for thin clients can add new features via a couple of downloads available from Microsoft.
Enhanced Write Filter Management Tool for Windows Thin PC and the File Based Write Filter Management Tool for Windows Thin PC are offered free of charge through the Microsoft Download Center.
Both releases are actually out-of-band features for Windows Thin PC, a smaller footprint, locked down flavor of Windows 7.
The File Based Write Filter Management Tool offers WinTPC customers an application enabling them to monitor and configure the File Based Write Filter (FBWF).
Similarly, the Enhanced Write Filter Management Tool is designed to simplify the administration and setting up of the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF).
“By default the application will start on system start and will register a notification area icon. The settings, however, allow suppressing the automatic starting,” the Redmond company said.
“The tool can be started with a command line parameter to open either the overview dialog or (for users with administrative privileges) the configuration dialog. If the tool is started with a command line parameter, the tool will exit as soon as the respective dialog is closed.”
Windows Thin PC (WinTPC) was released to manufacturing in mid-2011, with the software giant providing customers with a platform designed to let them repurpose their legacy PCs as thin clients.
A free trial download of WinTPC has been available for download since early July 2011, and continues to be up for grabs for those customers that want to take the operating system out for a spin.
“The Enhanced Write Filter Management Tool has a dependency on the Enhanced Write Filter Provider,” Microsoft notes, adding that “The File Based Write Filter Management Tool has a dependency on the File Based Write Filter Provider.”
