TrailRunner 2.1 (v443) is now available for users of Berbie’s route-planning solution. The new version fixes almost a dozen issues discovered mostly by users. The Tiger-supported branch (TrailRunner 1.6) has also been updated recently, including both fixes, as well as new additions.

TrailRunner can display maps and elevation data from web-based mapping services like USGS topo maps, import GPS Recordings from Trails for iPhone, as well as import tracks and workouts from GPS fitness devices like the Garmin ForeRunner or Garmin Edge. Users can describe favorite tracks and rate them with iTunes stars, and plan their routes interactively, or automatically for a given distance. The app also boasts the ability to export route directions onto an iPod, and the ability to journalize workouts in a diary, see progress in a history chart, and, ultimately, publish a WebLog to MobileMe. For TrailRunner 2.1, version 443 brings the following bug fixes, according to Berbie, the maker of the app:

- Fixed a formatting issue when the value within a distance edit field was removed; - Fixed average speed display inconsistency for some TCX imports; - Fixed display of route name in weblog export; - Fixed problem where the route detail entries did start at one hour; - Fixed problem where sometimes the last map location was not saved; - Fixed problem with crap data points in Garmin Training Center recordings; - Fixed problem removing waypoints still connected to other elements; - Fixed map services for terrain and satellite; - Nanomap export was broken.

As for TrailRunner 1.6 (v209), Berbie claims that errors "failed to split at" and "_duringModifySectionsStack == 0" (crash-reporters) may or may not have been fixed. Users should proceed with caution while testing this area of the software and report any issues to the developer. New additions include a Route > New Route from Selection command, as well as new Hiking maps for Spain (including Mallorca and Menorca); Servicio Web de Mapas Base Cartográfica Numérica 1:25.000 y 1:200.000 del IGN. Berbie has been able to improve the map Reload Command under File > Consolidate as well.

Downloading and using TrailRunner is free. However, all current releases of TrailRunner will only run for about three months. TrailRunner is still in the pre-release state, therefore users are advised to regularly update to the most current version, as well as review and accept the License Agreement that comes with the application, before using it. TrailRunner versions above 1.6 (including the one available for download today) require Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to run. The only remaining version supported on Tiger is TrailRunner 1.6. TrailRunner is updated on a weekly basis with very few exceptions.
