The Google Chrome development team has updated the Dev Channel with new fixes for the WebKit-based web browser setting new standards in speed and functionality across all major operating systems available today. Google Chrome 4.0.220.1 is available for Mac OS X users as a free download right here, on Softpedia.

The changelog for Chrome 4.0.220.1 reveals that all platforms suffered from a couple of issues that have been addressed as follows: remove "Remove Item" from download item context menu; Omnibox now understands Zeroconf .local hosts.

A single, Windows-only fix is available with this release. According to the Chrome developers, the Native Client is now built into the renderer, but it's disabled by default. The release notes include additional information on this bug and how the development team has addressed the issue.

A total of seven Mac OS X-specific bugs have been addressed as well. Those include:

- cmd-f, cmd-g, cmd-e now use the system-wide find pasteboard; - cmd-up/cmd-down now work correctly; - sheets should be positioned between the content and everything above it, no matter if they are window- or tab-modal; - download item name no longer displayed in white in Incognito window; - about:ipc page enabled; - Omnibox now draws red bar over "https" for bad site certificates; - Typing option-return in the Omnibox now opens a new foreground tab.

Google is also actively developing an operating system bearing the Chrome dubbing. The OS will feature key aspects like speed, simplicity and security, according to Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management at Google. "We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work," Pichai said in a statement.
