14 DAY TRIAL // Mozilla is one step closer to delivering uninterrupted browsing to users of its open source browser on top of Windows and Linux platforms. An updated version of the Beta development milestone for Firefox 3.6.4 is currently available for download, with the final release of the refresh scheduled for approximately a week from now. According to Mozilla, the respin of Firefox 3.6.4 was considered necessary because of bugs discovered since the initial Beta was released to the public.
“An updated beta of Firefox 3.6.4 is now available for download and public testing. This version fixes issues found in the previous beta of Firefox 3.6.4,” Mozilla’s Christian Legnitto revealed. “Users who have already downloaded or opted in to the previous Firefox 3.6.4 beta should receive the latest beta as an automatic update. An additional opt-in upgrade offer will be made to users on the beta channel later this week. If you did not download the previous beta and would like to help us test this release, please download the latest Firefox 3.6.4 Beta.”
Early adopters that have already tested the first Firefox 3.6.4 Beta or the codename Lorentz release know that Mozilla is gearing up to add Out of Process Plugins to Firefox 3.6. This move was initially planned for Firefox 3.6.3, but, as the previous update to the open source browser was rushed to the market due to the need to patch a security vulnerability, the introduction of OOPP was postponed to v3.6.4. With OOPP, Mozilla worked to isolate plugins such as Flash and Silverlight from the browser, in order to make sure that Firefox wouldn’t be affected in any way by poor performance or by crashes from the extensions.
“Firefox 3.6.4 build 3 will be offered as an automatic update to the rest of the 3.6.x beta channel users on Thursday, May 6th,” Mozilla revealed. At this point in time, the plan is to release the final version of Firefox 3.6.4 concomitantly with Firefox 3.5.10, next week, on May 13th, 2010.
