Following the first release candidate of Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 7 operating system, Santa Clara, California-based NVIDIA announced on Thursday the release of its latest WHQL-certified GeForce graphics drivers, designed to provide NVIDIA GPU users with support for Microsoft’s Windows 7 RC1. In addition, as with all driver updates, the company has also enabled a series of performance enhancements for some of the latest gaming applications on the market. Release version 185.85 will provide support for both GeForce and Ion-based products, enabling PC users to take full advantage of the features enabled by the next installment of Windows.

“Windows 7 users now have the absolute latest in performance and support for features including SLI, PhysX, 3D Vision, and DirectX Compute,” said Dwight Diercks, vice president of software engineering at NVIDIA. “For gaming, video transcoding, and an overall better computing experience on Windows 7, users now have the peace of mind knowing that we have the official Microsoft WHQL stamp of approval.”

The WHQL-certified 185.85 release delivers support for NVIDIA GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100 and 200-series of desktop GPUs, also including the chip maker’s most recent release, ION. According to the release notes, the new drivers add support for the latest GeForce GTX 275 GPU, CUDA 2.2, OpenGL 3.0 and a number of additional performance increases for known game titles. By comparison to the Release 182 drivers, the new ones should deliver the following improvements, according to NVIDIA:

Up to 25% performance increase in The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

Up to 22% performance increase in Crysis: Warhead with antialiasing enabled

Up to 11% performance increase in Fallout 3 with antialiasing enabled

Up to 14% performance increase in Far Cry 2

Up to 30% performance increase in Half-Life 2 engine games with 3-way and 4-way SLI

Up to 45% performance increase in Mirror’s Edge with antialiasing enabled
