Apple has launched iTunes 10.4, a new version of the company’s media playing and digital storefront application for Mac and Windows customers.

An application that is fully supported in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, iTunes 10.4 is now available for all Mac users starting with version 10.5 of the operating system (Leopard), as well as for Windows users.

Apple has a note for each OS version in particular:

“iTunes 10.4 is now designed for OS X Lion,” reads the note targeting Mac users.

“You can now use iTunes with OS X Lion's new Full-Screen App capability, which allows you to use iTunes and other without distractions. Navigate between your full-screen apps with a simple gesture.”

Continuing to address Mac customers, Cupertino also reveals that “iTunes is now a 64-bit Cocoa application on OS X Lion.”

The newly-updated software includes important stability and performance improvements. However, some plug-ins may no longer be compatible with this version of iTunes, Apple cautions.

Users are being advised to contact the plug-in developer for an updated plug-in compatible with iTunes 10.4.

For Windows users, iTunes 10.4 simply provides stability and performance improvements. No Lion-specific functionality is to be found in the Windows version of the app, though it’s a 64-bit binary on Microsoft’s OS as well.

Hardware requirements for iTunes 10.4 include a Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 processor (1.0GHz PowerPC G4 or faster processor is required to play Standard Definition video from the iTunes Store), 512MB of RAM (1GB is required to play HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras), at least 16MB of video RAM for video playback, and a broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store and App Store.
