Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) has announced its portable curriculum for Algebra 1, the HMH Fuse: Algebra 1 iPad application. The app itself is free, but it costs $59.99 to gain complete access to the Algebra 1 content.

HMH Fuse: Algebra 1 is touted as a first for K-12 education, as it delivers Holt McDougal Algebra 1 core curriculum enhanced with the interactive capabilities today’s students demand right onto the iPad screen.

HMH designed the app so that it engages tech-savvy 21st century students with access to over 400 video tutorials, step-by-step animated instructions, instant feedback on practice questions, and the ability to write, record and save notes.

Teachers and students can customize learning and meet individual needs by combining instruction with ongoing support and intervention.

Teachers in particular can monitor performance with real-time student-specific feedback via Wi-Fi.

The app is currently being piloted by in the Long Beach, Riverside, Fresno, and San Francisco Unified School Districts in California. There, some 400 students are reportedly working with HMH Fuse: Algebra 1.

“HMH is transforming content delivery and the overall learning experience to take advantage of the iPad environment as well as alternate digital device platforms. These apps aren’t just digitized copies of a textbook,” said Mike Lavelle, president of HMH.

“Our Algebra 1 app’s interactive format takes students to the cutting edge of innovative 21st century instruction. HMH Fuse represents the next era of digital education.”

HMH promises to also release Geometry and Algebra 2 applications this spring, as well as to optimize its major K-12 titles for use across more platforms.

HMH Fuse: Algebra 1 is compatible solely with the iPad (no mentioning of iPad 2 but we’re guessing it’s supported by default), and a minimum iOS version 3.2.
