Google has announced the release of Chrome 10.0.648.11 Dev, a new version of its light-weigh, WebKit-based web browser for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux.

Targeting all supported platforms, Google Chrome 10.0.648.11 focuses on further strengthening the stability of the software, as did the previous Dev release.

“The Chrome Dev channel has been updated to 10.0.648.11 for all platforms,” Jason Kersey blogs for Google.

“This build contains stability fixes and refinements to the new settings pages,” Kersey notes.

“Full details about the Chrome changes are available in the SVN revision log. If you find new issues, please let us know by filing a bug,” the blogger concludes his post.

Last updated on January 26th, the Chrome Dev branch includes numerous stability fixes, with one recent update (Chrome 10.0.642.2) featuring a fair amount of fixes targeting the Mac OS X version of the browser.

The release made thumbnails closable in tab overview mode, and delivered three additional fixes that were particularly aimed at Macintosh users.

The Stable branch is still at version 8.0, but is likely to move forward to 9.0, with progress in the Beta Channel reportedly running smoothly.

Those who haven’t yet updated Chrome to the latest stable version are encouraged to do so as the new (8.0.552.237) build patches a large amount of security bugs.

Google Chrome requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and an Intel-based Mac.

A note about Google Chrome release channels and updates

Chrome boasts a release system with three distinct channels: Stable, Beta, and Developer preview, called the "Dev" channel.

The Stable channel is updated with features and fixes only after they are thoroughly tested in the Beta channel, while the Beta channel is being updated with stable and complete features from the Dev channel, where ideas get tested.
