Power Plan Assistant for Windows 7 is an application designed to extend the default power-saving capabilities, brought to the table by the latest iteration of the Windows client. Developed by Vladimir Plenskiy, the utility is available for download free of charge; however, it is offered as donationware, and the author will certainly not turn down donations from users that will find the utility useful. Power Plan Assistant is essentially set up to deliver more control to customers when it comes down to the power utilization of computers running Windows 7.

Described as a smart power plan management application, the Power Plan Assistant is tailored specifically to the successor of Windows Vista. Users will find that the tool plays nice will both the 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) editions of Windows 7.

One of the advantages offered by the Power Plan Assistant involves making it easy for end users to jump between the three default Windows 7 power-plans. In contrast, the operating system’s power icon only offers two of the power plans simultaneously at any given time. In this regard, the icon for the Power Plan Assistant is designed to change dynamically and adapt itself to the specific power plan chosen by users.

In addition, the tool also allows customers to configure their machines to “switch the power plans automatically: to 'Power Saver' (to preventively save the energy if the battery level goes low), to 'High Performance' (on plugging in) and to 'Balanced' (on plugging out). As shown on a screenshot below, every Power Plan Assistant's setting is user-configurable, i.e. user can enable or disable it, either permanently or for a current session only. Even the balloon messages and the notification icon appearance/behavior can be customized,” according to Plenskiy.
