Customers leveraging Internet Information Services can take advantage of a new free tool available from Microsoft, designed to streamline a variety of tasks including migration, management and deployment of not just IIS web servers, but also Cloud applications and websites.

Web Deploy v2.0, or Web Deployment Tool 2.0, is now live on the Microsoft Download Center where admins can grab either the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) versions.

According to the Redmond company, Web Deploy 2.0 can be used in additional scenarios beyond migrating web apps between IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0.

The software giant notes that admins will be able to increase efficiency when it comes down to server farm synchronization, as well as enjoy simplified packaging, archiving, and deployment processes for Cloud applications.

“Administrators can use command-line scripting with Web Deploy to synchronize IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0 servers or to migrate an IIS 6.0 server to IIS 7.0.

“Web Deploy Tool also enables administrators and delegated users to use IIS Manager to deploy ASP.NET and PHP applications to an IIS 7.0 server,” Microsoft revealed.

When it comes down to web application, admins will be able to package entire sites down to their associated databases. Such packages can include ACLs, COM, GAC and even registry settings.

When deploying a Cloud app, customers are not required to leverage an admin account with full privileges, and can easily delegate tasks to non-administrators.

Tasks such as synchronization can be used for just an app, but also extended to entire sites and beyond that to web servers, with a focus on synching only the content that is modified.

Additional features include:

“•Seamless integration with IIS 7.0 Manager and Visual Studio 2010 interface for creating packages and deploying them onto a machine, both locally and remotely.

•Seamless integration with the Web Platform Installer to install community web applications simply and easily.

•In addition to the IIS Manager and Visual Studio 10, tasks can be performed using the command-line or public APIs.”
