14 DAY TRIAL // Firefox 3.5.8 and Firefox 3.0.18 are now available for download, pushing one step further version 3.0 and 3.5 of Mozilla’s open source browser. Users have been able to read right here on Softpedia that the latest security and stability updates for the two still-supported flavors of Firefox which preceded Firefox 3.6 were just around the corner yesterday, February 18th. By the end of the day, Mozilla indeed delivered both Firefox 3.5.8 and Firefox 3.0.18, both releases being now up for grabs (download links at the bottom of this article).
“As part of Mozilla’s ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 3.5.8 and Firefox 3.0.18 are now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux as free downloads,” stated Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's director of Firefox. Mozilla continues to offer support for customers running not only Firefox 3.5 but also v3.0 despite having launched Firefox 3.6 in the second half of January 2010.
Mozilla has since then also moved onward, and delivered an Alpha preview of Gecko 1.9.3, the next version of the browser’s rendering engine under the label Firefox 3.7, this although users shouldn’t really expect version 3.7 to follow 3.6. For the time being, however, the best course of action for existing Firefox users is to make the jump to 3.6. The only problem I see in this regard is the fact that there are add-ons that users rely on heavily, which are not yet compatible with the latest version of Firefox.
“All Firefox 3 users are encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 3.6 by downloading it (…) or by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu in Firefox 3.0.18,” Beltzner advised. Customers still running v3.5 and v3.0 of Firefox need to at least deploy the latest security and stability refreshes offered by Mozilla, especially for the patches included with the updates.
“We strongly recommend that all Firefox users upgrade to this latest release. If you already have Firefox 3.5 or Firefox 3, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu,” Beltzner added.
