Despite having used the Mojave codename for an experiment involving nothing more than Windows Vista but “masqueraded” as the next version of the Windows operating system, the moniker is actually used by Microsoft with reference to a software product, namely Commerce Server 2009. In mid-December 2009, the Redmond company made available for download a Community Technology Preview of codename Mojave. Since the December 2009 CTP, the software giant has moved forward with the evolution of Commerce Server 2009 and is now offering the Release Candidate build.

Microsoft emphasized that the RC of Mojave was the final pre-release Build of Commerce Server 2009 and that the RTM (release to manufacturing) version was next in line. “This Release Candidate is our last pre-release before final release of the product. While this version contains a limited "use in production" license, it is a time-bombed release and you will need to acquire the product through your Volume Licensing, MSDN or ISV channels in the near future. This pre-release requires an installed version of Microsoft Commerce Server 2007 Enterprise or Standard Edition. This release is not compatible with Commerce Server 2007 Developer Edition,” Microsoft revealed.

Commerce Server 2009 RC comes packaged as a DVD ISO Image that has to be burned on a DVD before installation. Microsoft stressed that customers would have to uninstall all previous releases of Commerce Server CTP before deploying the RC build. Commerce Server 2009 is designed to streamline the process of selling goods online, providing businesses with the possibility of expanding their reach.

This is possible via “multiple channels using an out-of-the-box shopping site, SharePoint Commerce Services, and the Multi-Channel Commerce Foundation. The new out-of-the-box shopping site leverages SharePoint Commerce Services, which provides a gallery of ASP.NET 3.5 Web Parts, a comprehensive e-commerce shopping feature-set, and technology integration between Commerce Server and SharePoint technologies. The Multi-Channel Commerce Foundation provides a new unified, extensible run-time programming model for Commerce Server, including new run-time e-commerce capabilities,” Microsoft added.
