Avid, makers of professional video editing solutions, have updated their Avid Studio application for Apple tablets. Avid Studio 1.1 is a free upgrade to all existing users, or a five-dollar purchase (4 EUR) for those trying out the app for the first time.

Avid Studio 1.1 records voiceovers directly to the timeline and delivers new finger swipe gestures that allow frame-by-frame and 10-by-10 frame navigation, plus easy entering of mark-in and mark-out points.

There are 14 new transitions and titles can span across multiple lines. Users can now separate audio tracks from video clips with ease, and the precision trimmer has been redesigned with enhanced functionality.

Stability improvements have been made as well of all versions of Apple’s iPad, including the third-gen model with Retina display.

“Big-screen moviemaking comes to the touchscreen with Avid® Studio for iPad. We’ve distilled the world’s leading film-editing technology into an easy-to-use app that enables you to edit video, audio, and photos at the speed of your creativity,” says Avid.

The developer describes how the application works, adding that users can “Swiftly arrange clips in the Storyboard, make precision edits using the Timeline, and add high-quality transitions, effects, voiceover, and a soundtrack.”

“Then share your movie via YouTube, Facebook, and more—or export to Avid Studio for the PC and continue editing with even more advanced tools,” read the iTunes description.

The software works with several types of media, including video, audio, and photos. Power users can also capture video and photos from within the app, and they can make precise edits using the Precision Trimmer and Razor Blade tools, and use Montage templates to create multi-layer 3D animations, transitions, and titles.

Avid Studio 1.1 is compatible only with the iPad (not iPhone or iPod touch) and requires iOS 5.1 or later.
