Apple has just released a new software update for owners of its slow-selling set-top-box, the Apple TV. Considered a hobby by the company developing Mac OS X, the Apple TV software is rarely updated, while the most recent updates include mere tweaks and bug fixes.

While MacRumors forum users haven’t reported any obvious changes so far, AppleInsider is able to inform that the update appears to be related to the release of Aperture 3.0. The new version of Apple’s professional photography software is known to have made changes to how the software shares images over a local network. It also adds support for iPhoto's Places and Faces features, the site points out.

Also reported by several Apple TV users who’ve gotten around to updating their set-top-boxes is that, since applying the update, problems related to switching its HDMI output cable have disappeared. Minor tweaks in the user interface also seem to have been included, in what looks like an attempt to enhance the readability of the text, the same AppleInsider informs.

Those eager to update their Apple TVs have a few instructions to follow, if they’re not 100% sure they know the procedure. Apple claims it is always a good idea to make sure they have the latest software update for their Apple TV. For one reason or another, a direct download link to the DMG file aimed at unpacking and installing the updated Apple TV software is also available for Mac OS X. However, the appropriate steps for updating one's Apple TV software, according to Apple, are:

- Select Settings > General using your Apple Remote. - Select Update Software. - At this time your Apple TV checks to see if an update is available and a Download Now message should appear. - Select Download Now to start the download process. - When the update has finished downloading, an Update Now message should appear. - To start the update process, select Update Now. During the update process, your Apple TV will conduct a restart which is followed by the Apple logo and a status bar. - Note: On some TVs, the screen may display black for up to 15 minutes and the Apple TV may flash an amber light; this is expected behavior. Do not unplug your Apple TV during the update process. - After the final restart, your Apple TV plays the opening video and returns to the main menu.
