Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices has recently announced the availability of a new set of WHQL-certified drivers for its line of Radeon graphics cards, coming to support the recent public release of Microsoft's next-generation Windows 7 RC1 operating system. The new drivers are available for download immediately and will provide Radeon users with WHQL-certified support for any of their Radeon HD 2000, 3000 or 4000 series of graphics processing units.

“By delivering a WHQL certified driver for the Windows 7 operating system at the earliest possible opportunity, AMD has once again demonstrated its driver leadership,” said Ben Bar-Haim, corporate vice president, Software Engineering, AMD. “AMD is working closely with Microsoft to ensure superior performance and a reliable Windows 7 experience throughout our line of graphics processors.”

WHQL stands for Windows Hardware Quality Labs, which essentially means that a certain hardware product has been tested and approved for compatibility with Microsoft's operating systems. With the latest release from AMD, users of Radeon graphics cards will be able to take full advantage of the features enabled by the latest release from the Redmond, Washington-based software giant.

According to the graphics chip maker, the new driver release, which has been specifically designed for use with Microsoft's Windows 7 RC1, will enable the following features:

Industry-leading driver stability and reliability

Full WDDM 1.1 WHQL-certified support under Windows 7

Scheduled performance and new feature innovation every month

Enablement of ATI Stream technology for general purpose GPU (GPGPU) computing on supported graphics cards.

With the announcement, AMD also said that a full unified WHQL-certified driver for both Windows Vista and Windows 7 was scheduled to become available later this month, with the release of the ATI Catalyst 9.5 set of drivers.
