Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices has recently announced a new series of ATI FirePro drivers that have been designed to provide users with support for OpenGL 3.0 graphics API, confirming the chip maker's commitment to the aforementioned Application Programming Interface. In addition, AMD also announced the publication of an OpenGL extension and promised to enable future support for the recently-announced OpenGL 3.1. According to the company, the latest release of graphics drivers is designed to provide support for users of ATI FirePro graphics cards and enable them with the necessary support for OpenGL 3.0 and a number of OpenGL extensions designed for improved performance.

“AMD’s implementation of OpenGL 3.0 demonstrates our commitment to delivering continued support for the OpenGL API, which is the API of choice for many CAD, digital content creation and scientific application providers,” said Janet Matsuda, senior director, AMD Professional Graphics. “AMD has long been an active participant in OpenGL API standards work. Extensions, such as tessellation, allow developers to take full advantage of powerful ATI FirePro graphics accelerators that provide performance, stability and visionary innovation for graphics professionals. We look forward to future enhancements that will be available in OpenGL 3.1 and beyond.”

According to the chip maker, the new ATI Catalyst version 8.583 graphics drivers enable support for OpenGL 3.0 and showcase the company's commitment to provide future support for OpenGL 3.1. This commitment is expressed by the integration of OpenGL extensions, including AMD_vertex_shader_tessellator and AMD_GPU_association, designed to provide improved performance scaling and parallel processing for multiple GPUs and an increased geometry detail, meant to offer enhanced scene realism.

With the announcement of the new ATI Catalyst graphics drivers for ATI FirePro video accelerators, AMD promised that an upcoming ATI Catalyst software release would expand the company's support for the latest versions of OpenGL API, including the recently announced OpenGL 3.1.
