The father of all co-op beat ‘em ups, Double Dragon has been remastered to work better on modern PCs and courtesy to DotEmu, it’s now available for purchase on Steam and GOG.

The new compilation that’s been brought to PCs by French developer DotEmu contains all three installments of the arcade series: Double Dragon, Double Dragon 2 – The Revenge, and Double Dragon 3 – The Rosetta Stone.

Double Dragon Trilogy includes two game modes: Arcade, where you can play it from start to finish and go for the high score, and Story, where players can unlock new stages and achievements while playing through the game.

There are no cutscenes or dialogs in the story mode, which means that you kind of need to know the story before playing the game if that’s what you’re after.

It also includes customizable controls (keyboard and controller), as well as three difficulty levels: easy (easier than the original), original (similar to the arcade version) and expert (a real challenge).

Double Dragon Trilogy features two soundtracks that players can choose from: the original 8-bit soundtrack and a remastered version. Local and online multiplayer is included as well, along with achievements and leaderboards.

Lots of fans are disappointed by the port done by DotEmu

Even though Double Dragon Trilogy is available on Steam for just €3.99 ($3.99) thanks to a 20% discount, a fair share of fans are a bit disappointed by DotEmu’s work.

“Can I recommend this, at this time? No, not exactly. If you're looking for the arcade games as you remember them, not entirely. If you're looking for a faithful revival of the series, then play Double Dragon Neon,” says one player.

Another player is even harsher, “this is a classic trilogy for the ages. There's Double Dragon (of course) Double Dragon 1 with slightly different colors (brilliant) and Double Dragon 3 where you get to walk like a robot through the dirty streets of..wherever. I'm not sure what happened in 3 because the story flashed right before my eyes. Menus are awful, games crashed and Double Dragon 3 is a joke.”

There’s no demo available for Double Dragon Trilogy, but since it doesn’t cost a fortune, it may actually be worth a try if you’re a beat ‘em up fan.
