14 DAY TRIAL // Indie developer Klei Entertainment has confirmed that it's going to debut Don't Starve: Giant Edition onto the PS Vita next week, and that those who already own Don't Starve's regular version on PS4 will get it for free via the Cross-Buy system.
Don't Starve has impressed quite a lot of PC owners for a very long time, appearing first as an Early Access title, as Klei wanted to hear from fans just what modifications they want in the game ahead of its actual release.
After the initial PC debut, Klei worked hard and adapted the game for the PS4 platform, even offering it for free via the PlayStation Plus system earlier this year.
Now, the PS Vita edition of Don't Starve is coming, and due to the restrictions on the mobile platform, Klei had to incorporate the Reign of Giants DLC into the game, resulting in Don't Starve: Giant Edition.
According to a new announcement on the PS blog, Klei now has the game in certification for the PS Vita and expects to release it on September 2, in North America, and September 3, in Europe.
The game won't allow for any Cross-Play between the PS4 and PS Vita versions, as they use different save file systems. However, PS4 owners will get it for free provided they own the game on the home console.
"Unfortunately, in order for us to get the game on Vita, we had to rewrite a bunch of backend code to optimise it. Because of this, the save games are not compatible with the PS4, so there is no Cross-Play. But! We love you all, so we’re making the game Cross-Buy!"
"If you own Don’t Starve on PS4, you get the PS Vita version for free, and vice versa. Thank you for supporting our game, and please spread the word so we can keep making more interesting games!"
What's more, the deal doesn't care about owning the DLC on the PS4. Meaning if you have the regular game on the home console, you're still entitled to the Giant Edition on the PS Vita.
In case you forgot, Reign of Giants introduces quite a lot of brand new things, from two fresh protagonists, to seasons, much bigger worlds, and way more aggressive enemies. Of course, given its name, giants are also present in the actual expansion.
