14 DAY TRIAL // The cartoonish allure of Don't Starve hides beneath its innocuous veneer a dark and foreboding experience. An eerie and gruesome struggle for survival in an open world where you feed upon the death of others in order to postpone your own inevitable death.
Now, Don't Starve got even more gloomy, with the addition of the Reign of Giants DLC expansion. Once the expanded adventure is installed, players will find a Reign of Giants toggle in the game's main menu, which will allow them to either play the vanilla experience or infuse it with new characters, new items, seasons and biomes.
Of course, as is expected in any such expansion, Reign of Giants brings with it new creatures which will become your delicious meals, and new creatures which regard you as their next delicious meal.
As if the game wasn't horrible enough already. Just when you think you're starting to get the hang of it, Klei Entertainment throws more horrible stuff your way. The developer does note, however, that the update is not yet finished and that there is much more to be added, as well as some bug cleanup work to be done and a few balance tweaks to be implemented.
"It's still missing a few pieces of content and will definitely have additional bugs and balance issues. To iron that stuff out, we're going on Early Access so that we can get even more people playing and getting their eyes on the game. During our Early Access period, we're hoping players will continue to submit bug reports, suggestions, and feedback on our forums so that we can make the expansion as balanced, polished, and fun as possible," the listing says.
The preview trailer for Reign of Giants shows some of the newly added content, set to a wacky and disturbing soundtrack that seems to come from an alternate reality where One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a noir horror movie.
Reign of Giants is now available for the PC, Mac and Linux versions of Don't Starve, and PlayStation 4 users will have to wait a bit longer for the new DLC to reach their platform of choice.
For now, Klei Entertainment has not revealed any info regarding the actual time of the PS4 release, but has promised to make the announcement sometime soon.
Reign of Giants is available on Steam Early Access, at 20 percent off, with the special promotion offer lasting until April 29.
