Each year, people who for some wacky reason enjoy eating dog meat gather in China's city of Yulin and take part in a gruesome feast where the main course on the menu is the remains of some very unfortunate pooches.

The people organizing this festival and those taking part in it maintain that, since dogs are not an endangered species, there really isn't any need for people to make such a big fuss over their eating one or two such animals.

Animal lovers disagree, and say that this bizarre gathering can hardly be labeled as a festival.

Those who keep dogs very close to their hearts have even organized protests, hoping that this might help persuade the Chinese government to ban the festival.

“We have seen animals beaten just before being cooked. The more we inspect, the more cruelty we discover,” animal rights activist Du Yefung reportedly commented on previous such festivals.

The dog meat festival is an event dating back to several decades ago. In is intended to be a celebration of the summer solstice.
