Codemasters’ new Racing division has once again talked about Dirt Showdown, which is out late next month, confirming what sort of cars are present in the racing title and why such a grave departure from the classic Dirt recipe was taken.

Dirt games delivered some intense racing experiences focusing on realistic rally simulation, with players taking performance cars through all sorts of environments.

As we saw in Dirt 3, however, Codemasters wants to diversify the experience and is currently preparing to debut Dirt Showdown, which eliminates rally events and replaces them with regular races, as well as Demolition derbies and special Hoonigan competitions.

According to the game’s Senior Designer, Mike Chapman, the Codemasters Racing team decided this new direction for the series after completing Dirt 3.

“It has to be said that the idea for a game like Dirt Showdown has been in the studio’s collective mind for some time. After we finished work on Dirt 3, we knew that the time was right for the Dirt team to explore some new avenues. First and foremost though, the game will be an exciting Dirt experience in its own right and we’re confident that our existing fans will appreciate the direction we’ve taken, especially with what that means for future games in the series.”

Players are still in for a great racing experience, however, as Codemasters has included a variety of licensed cars in the Hoonigan competitions, but the vehicles in the Demolition or Race ones are completely fictional, because the studio wants to deliver proper destruction and variety.

“All of our Hoonigan vehicles are fully licensed. However, we made the decision to fictionalise our Demolition and Race vehicles in order to push our damage model further than we ever could before. These fictional vehicles are still based on real world examples however and it’s allowed us to offer a greater amount of visual variety between the vehicles.”

Dirt Showdown is out at the end of May and will get a demo tomorrow, on May 1, on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.
