Much has been said about a fourth “Mad Max” movie but, until just now, nothing of that was ever confirmed. Fans knew one was being made with the original director George Miller at the helm but they were never offered more than tidbits of info. In a recent interview with ABC News, Miller not only proves himself to be very generous as regards details on the film but even shows off one of the cars that will appear in it.

“Mad Max” has been such a successful franchise because it refuses to do things by the book and will always push the envelope farther and farther, Miller explains in the interview. 20 years after the last film, it’s ever so important to have the upcoming installment set new standards in terms of action movies. With this is mind, fans shouldn’t be surprised Miller has already started working on the cars that will appear in the fourth film, “Fury Road,” since building them can take up to a year, as Geeks of Doom can confirm.

“Miller explains that the vehicles have to be incredibly high-performance to accomplish the shots that they need, but that they also have to be very safe for all the insane stunts that Miller promises will be used. Because of this, he says that it will take about a year to fully construct them all and that this extended time period is also to ensure that they raise the bar considering how much things have changed over the past 30 years in both action movies and film making in general. He then moves on to casting and admits that they’ve been ‘furiously’ [casting], but that he still has no idea who will be involved yet.” the aforementioned e-zine says of the interview.

Since in the previous three films it was Mel Gibson who had the leading role, one reporter wanted to know whether Miller was even considering asking him to return to the franchise. While the director would not give a definite answer (since that would only fuel ongoing rumors more), he did say that “everyone’s an option,” including Gibson. This alone is reason enough not to lose hope for the actor’s fans.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” is scheduled for theatrical release in the summer of 2010. As George Miller also explains in the video below, casting is not even done yet. However, make sure you keep an eye here for an official announcement regarding the stars that will appear in it.
