Stress and a hectic diet can cause serious damage to our hair

Alarming hair loss is a dilemma most modern women have faced over the past years. Whether it's because of an erratic diet or simply because of the high level of stress we have to live with every day, we lose more hair now than we used to lose five or ten years ago - and that feeling of standing in front of the mirror every morning staring at the hairbrush with increasing unease is neither enjoyable nor funny. What are we to do, then?

One thing we can do is try to keep calm. This is easier said than done, as we all have to live with the continuing stress of financial debt, worries about our futures, keeping our jobs and relationships balanced and functioning within reasonable parameters - and I could go on and on. The secret is to start small. A cup of chamomile tea in the morning and one in the evening before we go to bed work well on the anti-anxiety centers in our brains and help calm us down enough to start our day serenely or get a good night's sleep.

Another thing we can do is mind our iron intake - and try to include iron-rich foods in our diets. Red meat, eggs, fortified breakfast cereals and dark green vegetables (such as spinach for example) are rich in this mineral, and your hair is sure to thank you for it later. A hectic job and unhealthy, irregular eating habits can deprive us of the 14 mg of iron we should consume every day - so if you feel that you're still not getting enough, see your doctor and ask him to prescribe a multivitamin and mineral supplement.

Finally, make sure that you include enough iodine in your daily diet. This can be easily achieved if you eat fish regularly or use iodized salt for cooking. Iodine is extremely important, as it is directly responsible for the health of our thyroid gland which in turn controls the activity of hair follicles - if the thyroid works slower, the rate of hair growth will also decrease. Stay positive, and with a little effort, you should see results in a couple of months. Good luck.
