Blizzard has confirmed that it’s going to run a special open beta weekend for its Diablo III role-playing dungeon crawler, which will be held starting today, April 20, until Monday, April 23.

Diablo III is eagerly awaited by millions of players from all over the world, with Blizzard giving them small glimpses of the experience for quite a few years up until recently, culminating with a closed beta stage that’s been running for the last few months.

Now, everyone will be able to try out Diablo III as part of a special open beta weekend later today, as Blizzard is holding a special stress test in order to see how its servers handle the surge of Diablo III players.

“We're pleased to announce the Diablo III open beta weekend, which offers open access to all players with a valid Battle.net account! Beginning this Friday everyone is invited to log in and help us put the game and servers through their paces in this three day stress test as we march toward the game's release on May 15,” Blizzard said.

The open beta kicks off today, April 20, at 12:01PM PDT and lasts until Monday, April 23, at 10:00am PDT.

You’ll be able to play the game, team up with friends via the co-op mode, and try out each of the five character classes until level 13.

In order to make sure you can jump into the experience right when it kicks off, Blizzard advises you to log into your Battle.net account (or make one, if you don’t have such a thing), and create your BattleTag.

After that, you can download and install the Diablo III game client which will allow you access to the game once the open beta goes live.

Problems or lag might appear, Blizzard admits, but it’s all for the best, as this stress test will help the company ensure Diablo III will have a smooth launch next month.

“It's very possible that players connecting to the stress test could experience issues with the service. While not ideal, this is exactly why we're having a stress test. We want to catch and analyze as many bugs as possible during this stress test period, so that we can try to ensure a smooth launch on May 15,” the studio said.
