The new Crusader class will also abandon paladin and knight stereotypes

The Reaper of Souls expansion for Diablo 3 will bring more backstory to the characters from the regular game, not to mention an all-new Crusader class that isn't afraid of pulling off some dark humor when confronted with Diablo and his schemes.

Diablo 3 introduced five different character classes, from the Barbarian, to the Demon Hunter, Wizard, Witch Doctor, or Monk, each with different backgrounds, abilities, and specializations.

Even so, however, the story of the game had very few moments where it made direct references to a player's chosen character, essentially treating them in the same way no matter what.

This will change, however, with the release of Reaper of Souls, the first full-fledged expansion for Diablo 3.

According to Blizzard, which talked through the voice of Leonard Boyarsky with Diablo3.pl, way more references to a player's class and to its backstory are included in the new story act that's a part of the add-on.

"We wanted to show some more of the history of your character but also to give your character a little bit more personal stake in the battle. Turns out that Malthael has these spirits from your past whether they are from your long-distance past like barbarian or they are relatively new like wizard's or the demon hunter's," he said.

"He's torturing and using these souls for his own ends so it will hopefully will make you hate him that much more and want to free them and to put an end to his schemes. Main purpose was to add some depth because one of the hardest things to do in this game is to give player's class a lot more depth."

What's more, Boyarksy also confirmed that the sixth player class, the Crusader, which is also included in the expansion, won't fit the mold of traditional paladin or knight stereotypes, as he isn't afraid of pulling off some dark humor in order to cope with certain situations.

"We did that on purpose because we really wanted to play with the stereotype that you would expect. He is still that guy that fights for the right cause. He's seen a lot and the way he deals with all this death and destruction is with some dark humor. We already have enough dark and grim heroes so we felt that we wanted to have something different with the crusader."

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls launches for PC and Mac on March 25.
