Apple’s just-released iPhone software already compromised by hackers

It took lees than two days for the infamous iPhone Dev Team to update its PwnageTool application, which now jailbreaks Apple devices under iOS 4. The hackers also have an unlocking tool ready for those who’ve upgraded to the new iPhone OS, further enabling Apple fans yet again to break free from their shackles.

The latest Dev Team update, “foursome news,” confirms the public availability of PwnageTool 4.0, the newest version of the hacking app that can effectively jailbreak Apple devices running the latest iOS. However, “Each supported device has few different scenarios that users need to consider when performing the upgrades,” the Team warns on its blog. According to its post, “You need to […] perform the upgrade in the particular way that matches your current device state.”

The Team proceeds to inform jailbreakers that PwnageTool 4.0 doesn’t offer support for all iPhones and iPod touch models as of yet. One reason is iOS 4 itself not supporting original iPhone and iPod touch devices (first-gen iterations), the other being new-generation device particularities that the Team needs to figure out.

As such, the hack doesn’t support the iPhone 2G (first-gen iPhone), iPod touch first generation, and iPod touch third-generation. Nevertheless, PwnageTool 4.0 can jailbreak the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch 2G in a number of circumstances (e.g. previous user attempts to jailbreak, boot-rom, current device state, etc.). The team has a full set of details on these “scenarios” over at its blog.

Softpedia doesn't encourage jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
