While stealth is optional, you should really take advantage of it

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was released last week by publisher Square Enix and developer Eidos Montreal as a prequel to the massively successful and influential Deus Ex, and its sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War, launched at the beginning of the 2000s.

According to its developer, Human Revolution's gameplay has four basic aspects: hacking, social, stealth and actual combat. We've already talked about the social boss battles, as well as the necessity to invest in hacking right at the beginning.

Now, it's time to talk about stealth and how the game wants players to really try and be sneaky around its levels.

Adam Jensen is the main protagonist, an augmented individual with bionic limbs and abilities that stop short of super power status. Still, Human Revolution is more than eager to remind you that he's still human, especially when it comes to direct firefights.

The artificial intelligence that controls Jensen's enemies is quite smart and its aim is nothing short of supernatural, always finding the player even if he ducks his head out of cover for a fraction of a second.

As such, it's much simpler and less frustrating to avoid combat or direct firefights whenever possible. Luckily, the environments in Deus Ex are cleverly designed (except Hengsha, of course) and always offer multiple ways of getting around enemies, either by strategically-placed vents or lots of cover.

Until you can invest some Praxis points in the Dermal Armor augmentation, it's advisable to avoid firefights and only try to take down enemies when they're alone. If not, at least use distractions or gas grenades instead of going in guns-blazing.

Once you get protected, however, you can start charging through enemy positions with big weapons like the heavy rifle, or special augmentations like the Typhoon, and worry about your health afterwards.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is out now for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
