Health Discovery Corporation, a molecular diagnostics company that uses patent protected advanced mathematical techniques for personalized medicine, has introduced an iPhone application that can potentially save your life.

MelApp is downloadable from the Healthcare & Fitness category in the Apple App Store. What it basically does is assess the risk of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Melanoma has been deemed the leading cause of death from skin disease.

The app is first and foremost designed to help users learn about melanoma.

Its second purpose is to help users identify areas on their skin which may need attention from a physician specializing in the diagnosis of melanoma.

“MelApp can assist in the early detection of melanoma with the goal of ultimately saving lives,” Health Discovery Corporation says.

Herbert A. Fritshe, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer for Health Discovery Corp. and retired Professor of Laboratory Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center, said “This easy to use, inexpensive iPhone app is meant to raise the public awareness of melanoma and the need for its early detection.”

“MelApp has the ability to help consumers worldwide identify the risk of melanoma in skin lesions and seek appropriate medical care,” Fritshe said.

When discovered in its early stages, melanoma can be successfully removed and monitored by regular skin screenings, according to Health Discovery Corp.

Few treatment options exist and the median lifespan for patients with advanced melanoma is less than one year, according to the latest studies.

They also say that the incidence of people under 30 developing melanoma is increasing faster than any other demographic group, soaring by 50 percent in young women since 1980.

It’s not our place to say whether or not this is just to scare us and download the two dollar app from the App Store. For some, however, it’s a small price to pay to be at peace with oneself.
