South Korean media organizations and security officials say that an unknown group of hackers claims to have leaked the personal details of 40,000 US troops, including ones stationed in South Korea.

In addition, the hackers claimed to have released information on over 2 million South Korean ruling party workers.

According to Reuters, South Korean officials state that the data is being analyzed, but so far they haven’t been able to determine if it’s legitimate or not.

The news comes shortly after the South Korean government issued a cyber security alert due to cyberattacks on several official websites, including the one of the country’s presidency.

Reports revealed that hackers claiming to be part of Anonymous took credit for the attacks, but the defacement messages posted on the impacted sites also praised North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

South Korean officials haven’t pointed the finger at North Korea for these latest series of attacks, but North Korea is usually the main suspect when it comes to cyberattacks against South Korea.

North Korea also experienced several cyberattacks on Tuesday, many high-profile websites being disrupted by Anonymous hackers as part of the campaign called OpNorthKorea.
