Developer Bugbear Entertainment has finally revealed the proper title of its work-in-progress racing game, Next Car Game, to be henceforth known as Wreckfest.

Although that's the kind of name that makes you go vroom, vroom inside your head, it hardly seems an appropriate title for an in-depth driving simulation such as the one Bugbear is currently making.

The explanation lies with the meaning of the word, describing the kind of chain reaction crash that sometimes occurs on the racing track, when cars get clumped up and drivers misjudge how close their vehicles really are, resulting in one big wreck after another.

"As Wreckfest is all about the madness of colliding cars at breakneck speeds, a term describing the glory of tearing metal is nothing if not apt. Wreckfest's conjunction of purity of driving and the innate beauty of twisted metal creates massive amounts of emergent glee when punishing your friends and foes alike," the announcement blurb reads.

Bugbear Entertainment's upcoming racing game is a pretty ambitious project. The Finnish video game developer is using its experience with FlatOut and Ridge Racer Unbounded in the making of Wreckfest.

Next Car Game was featured on Kickstarter at the end of last year, but the crowdfunding campaign was canceled and the fundraising effort moved to Steam Early Access, where the game turned out to be pretty popular.

The developer unveiled the shiny new name, reminiscent of NASCAR and destruction derby action, and announced that the racer's latest build was live and ready to go. The latest update introduces a lot of new options, such as better camera control, customizable field of vision, and car upgrades.

Wreckfest is currently supporting up to 18 different players in multiplayer matches, with the goal being to get the number up to 24 in the final build of the game, according to the developer.

For the time being, the available game modes are Racing, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Demolition Derby. The Deathmatch modes will enable you to enjoy the car smashing action without being limited to a single vehicle, enabling you to rejoin the fray with a brand new vehicle to smash.

In case you're interested to know out more about the video game, you can find more details on the developer's official website. If you want to contribute to the development effort and get your hands on the game earlier than most, you can visit the Next Car Game / Wreckfest page on Steam.

For the time being, there is no prospective release date for Wreckfest.
