Bungie's sci-fi shooter / MOO mashup is now officially the most successful new IP released in the United Kingdom

The latest info from Chart-Track, pertaining to retail sales in the United Kingdom, reveals that Destiny is the biggest new IP to ever hit, beating previous record holder, Ubisoft's Watch Dogs.

The figures are now official, and even if Chart-Track only accounts for retail units moved, not including downloaded copies, the numbers still paint a pretty good picture of what's going on.

Destiny comes from former Halo developer Bungie, and it got off to a stellar start, managing to sell a cartload of units since its release on September 9. Its launch week sales even managed to beat those of Watch Dogs, the former record holder.

The scoop on Destiny

The charts show that the PlayStation 4 edition of the science fiction first-person shooter had the bulk of sales, accounting for 46 percent of the total units pushed, followed by the Xbox One, which took home 36 percent, with the Xbox 360 lagging behind at 14 percent, and the PlayStation 3 only managing to account for 3 percent of the game's total sales.

This means that Sony's pie was a tad smaller than Microsoft's combined platform prowess, even with the PlayStation 4 greatly outselling the Xbox One all around the world. But the fact that the next-gen home console managed to get almost half of all sales on its own speaks volumes about its potential to dominate the market in the future.

Although the logical explanation here would be that most PS3 owners upgraded to the PS4, hence the colossal difference in platform distribution as far as Sony's systems goes, the company mentioned several times that its user base was mainly comprised of newcomers, of those who came from other platforms or who skipped the last generation of consoles entirely.

This means that the PlayStation 4, with its current lead on the Xbox One, might dominate the beginning phase of the current generation's life cycle, as it's seeing massive software sales on pretty much every big title shipped since its launch in November 2013.

The charts show little variance

Taking into account the scope that Destiny's marketing efforts had, it's no wonder that Bungie's shooter is situated at the top of the UK software sales charts, dethroning last week's winner, The Sims 4, which now rests in second, ahead of former champion Watch Dogs, which now sits at spot number three.

Call of Duty: Ghosts and The Last of Us: Remastered close the top five, followed by Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, NHL 15, Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition, and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution.

Metro Redux, last week's top dog, has now fallen from the top 10, as has Blizzard Entertainment action role-playing game Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition. Minecraft maintains its steady presence in the top, and both Call of Duty: Ghosts and The Last of Us: Remastered continue to show strong sales.
