This summer, designers pull out all the stops and present us with wildly embroidered and decorated heels

Over the past few seasons, we've all witnessed the emergence of a rather spectacular and extremist trend: that of the "statement shoes", which sport elaborately embellished and decorated heels that either spell style and scream for attention or make the wearer look moderately alien to our little blue planet. Either way, fashionistas win - they now have yet another means at their disposal to channel their inner outrageously trendy selves and make a statement for the whole world to see and admire.

The heel ornamentation or "modified heels" trend consists of stylish women's footwear with lavishly decorated heels, sporting everything from flowers to petals, bells, studs and gems, crystals and actual embroidery. However, don't think that we're only dealing with a classic heel with a few glittery bits and pieces stuck to it - on the contrary, the design of the heel itself has suffered major modifications, with cut-out and reverse heels taking over the designer catwalks and wowing trendy women everywhere.

Miu Miu leads the way with the exquisite feminine designs of their carved wooden sandals and the equally classy aged-leather Swarovski crystal embellished sandal with front corsage. The Prada Floral Wave Pump and the amazing single-strap Prada Vernice Velluto designs closely follow the same flower heel construction.

Another interesting concept is that of the Miu Miu "teacup Mary-Jane" pumps, which come in red or black. Dior is not far behind on this trend, with its embroidered platform sandals that proudly sport an embroidery detail on the heel and platform and a dangling silver charm that is bound to make everyone notice the wearer, particularly if she's also sporting a simple and stylish little black dress.

This season's designer heels have a very surreal air about them and work well with the other hot summer trends - the skinny jeans, the smock and wrap dresses and the flowery, romantic maxi dresses. The essential part is - of course - not to hide the heels, but rather wear them proudly with a simple dress or a solid block-color outfit. Don't put on embroidered heels and a patterned dress, as this spells "overload disaster". Embellished heels are perfect for a little black dress, as long as you let them shine.
