A new resource available as a free download from Microsoft provides guidance for customers that are planning to make the jump to technologies such as Windows 7 and Office 2010. ‘Deploying the Core Optimized Desktop Using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010’ is a rather self-explanatory label, and interested IT professionals need to head over to the Microsoft Download Center and grab the whitepaper.

Obviously, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 can be used in order to automatically deploy and configure Windows 7, the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP), Forefront, and Office 2010, or as the software giant refers to these products, the core optimized desktop technologies.

Microsoft names flexible provision and management as one of the benefits of running optimized desktops.

“Core optimized desktop technologies include the Application Virtualization (App-V) client, the Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset (DaRT) recovery image, Forefront client, BitLocker, and Office 2010 virtual application cache,” the company stated.

“By installing these technologies during deployment, client computers will be ready for optimized desktop management immediately after installation.”

IT pros will be able to leverage the resource in order to perform a step by step guided deployment of core optimized desktops, starting with adding optimized desktop applications to a deployment share.

In addition, the Redmond company is also offering guidance on how to leverage DaRT in order to build a customer Windows Recovery Environment.

Administrators will additionally find details on such tasks as configuring Folder Redirection and setting up Roaming User Profiles.

“This white paper assumes that you have a server computer with MDT 2010 installed and a deployment share stocked with applications, operating system source files, and so on. It also assumes that you are able to configure Group Policy settings for your organization and have access to the MDOP installation files,” Microsoft added.
