14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft is allowing customers to deploy multiple Office 2010 SKUs on the same PC in scenarios in which they need components present in one edition of the productivity suite but not in the one they are currently running. Side-by-side and Uninstall-install are the two methods that the Redmond company recommends for the deployment of different Office 2010 suites on the same compute.
With the Side-by-side option, customers are able to make sure that the existing Office suite on the computer will be left in place, but also install the new suite.
Just as the label implies, Uninstall-install involves removing an existing Office 2010 installation and only subsequently the deployment of the new Office suite SKU.
Microsoft has even published guidance for IT professionals on TechNet, detailing the steps that need to be taken in order to have multiple Office 2010 suites deployed on the same computer.
The “Deploy different Office 2010 suites” article is available free of charge, and “contains the procedures for each option. Although deploying more than one Office 2010 suite on the same computer might not be required by most organizations, it can be appropriate in some scenarios.
“For example, departments in an organization that currently have Office Standard 2010 installed on their computers might now need applications that are available in Office Professional Plus 2010, such as Microsoft Access 2010,” the software giant explained.
The Side-by-side option involves making sure that Office Standard 2010 remains in place at the start of the Office Professional Plus 2010 deployment. Only then can Office Standard 2010 be uninstalled with customers having to also repair Office Professional Plus 2010 to get the job done.
With the Uninstall-install option, customers need to remove Office Standard 2010, restart the machine, customize Office Professional Plus 2010 and only then deploy the product.
Both methods have their respective advantages and disadvantages, the Redmond company informs, providing a list in the TechNet guidance.
