Demi Lovato has had more than a fair share of ups and downs. The former Disney darling has come a long way since the day she broke on the scene, and this also included a prolonged stint in rehab for emotional issues, addiction, and eating disorders.

Speaking with Company magazine about how rehab changed her life, besides the fact that it helped her get and stay healthy, Demi reveals that it made her see who her real friends were.

Before she sought professional help for her problems, she imagined that all the people around her were her friends when in fact they were nothing but hangers-on and leeches out to get whatever it is they wanted from her, she says, as cited by WKQR.

“A couple of months before I went to rehab, I had a birthday party and there were a couple of hundred people there. It was full of people who I considered my closest friends,” Demi says.

“When I turned my phone on after being in rehab for three months, I expected lots of text messages and phone calls. I had four texts. That was a wake up call. I have severe trust issues but I try not to be jaded,” she explains.

Today, she can count her friends on the fingers of both hands but, unlike then, she knows she can actually count on them.

“I don’t have loads of friends. I used to, but then I realized, do any of them actually care? Now I have people who, if I break my leg in the middle of the night, they’ll come to the hospital with me. Or they’ll answer the phone at 4 am if I need them,” she says.

She’s happier this way, Demi stresses.

Since completing her stay in rehab, the singer and X Factor judge has been very open about the issues that got her there, saying that, if at least one other person suffering of them heard what she had to say and sought help, she was happy.
