Dell has been promising the update for ages

Dell released the Venue 8 7840 in early 2015, but the tablet arrived with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, so many assumed the company would quickly push an update for it to bring it in line with the rest of the high-end devices available on the market.

Even if it came with an outdated operating system, the slate still is one of the best Dell has ever produced, boasting a sleek profile of 6mm / 0.23 inches. The device benefits from an 8.4-inch OLED display with 2,560 x 1600 pixel resolution which Dells calls “infinity” and an Intel Atom processor with 16GB of internal storage (microSD card can take it up to 512GB).

Anyway, it’s been a while since the tablet launched, but Dell has yet to push out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for it. However, this failure to deliver the latest in terms of OS hasn't stopped the company from updating the product page to say that the Android slate actually runs Lollipop.

For its part, Dell has announced on its forums that it certainly intends to push the Lollipop update out and even offered some dates, which naturally were all missed. At some point, a company representative said we should expect the new build to come in February, but then the date was moved to March, and so on.

Android 5.0.1 Lollipop for Dell Venue 8 7840 will come at some point

The latest update said that April 21 was the day when the Dell Venue 8 7840 would be receiving Android 5.0.1. However, we know this never happened and the company explained the situation by saying that a last-minute bug prevented it from rolling out the new software according to schedule.

Now, Dell seems to have learned its lesson, so it is abstaining from giving any more dates and is merely saying that Lollipop will be coming “soon.”

The company affirms that customer experience is more important, which means they will be taking their sweet time in developing the new update until it’s really ready. But the promise of Lollipop stands.

Other OEMs like NVIDIA, Sony and Samsung have managed to push out Lollipop updates for their flagship tablets already and they seem pretty stable.

So there’s no reason Dell shouldn't be able to pull things through eventually. But for that to happen, we might have to wait a few months at least.
