Dell has presented a computing solution aimed for use by OEMs and retail points of sales (POSs). The OptiPlex XE is built durable, stable, productive, secure, environmentally conscious and with a wide peripheral support, including PS/2, Serial (RS-232), VGA and up to seven USB ports. The desktop has a product cycle of 3.5 years and an up to 50% higher operating temperature threshhold than any other OptiPlex systems.

“Whether your solution needs are for heavy industry, kiosk-based transactions, or demanding retail environments, Dell understands the need to balance technology, stability and extended deployments,” Brian Slaughter, director, Retail Store Solutions Group for Dell, said. “With higher temperature thresholds, long lifecycles, and a ‘mount virtually anywhere’ capability, the OptiPlex XE is a system that is built to fit into your business environment.”

The actual heat tolerance is up to 55° C (131° F), when using the optional ducting kit. The ‘mount virtually anywhere’ capability makes it suited for enclosed spaces, especially when using standard port covers for dust protection. Nevertheless, regardless of the installment, the system has a high level of productivity. Downtime, for instance, can be reduced thanks to the optional, built-in, system-monitoring capabilities, whereas the rapid access to parts and services is possible through the Dell ProSupport for IT Fast Track Dispatch.

Besides the productivity, data-protection options such as a full disk encryption, RAID 1 support and chassis intrusion alerts protect organization assets. This security is present under all supported operating systems, namely Windows 7, Vista, XP, POSReady (available post-launch) and Ubuntu Linux (China only).

“The Dell OptiPlex XE supplements our desktop and workstation lineup with a device that fits the unique needs of OEMs across a variety of industries,” Rick Froehlich, vice president and general manager of Dell OEM, added. “This new solution offers the right balance of quality, stability and custom options that will motivate OEMs to consider the Dell OptiPlex XE as an alternative to whitebox or internally-built hardware.”

Along with the system itself, Dell is also offering the Dell ProSupport and Dell ProManag support solutions, as well as a “robust set of services for organizations looking to migrate to Windows 7.” The desktop is already available and has a price tag of USD709.
