The small form factor workstation will get even faster

Even though almost three months separate us from the launch of the first Ivy Bridge processors, Dell has apparently already started to make plans for the release of the T1650 desktop workstation, which will be based on Intel’s upcoming CPUs.

Starting most probably with the second quarter of this year, users will have the option of configuring the T1650 small form factor workstation with various Intel Xeon processors based on the Ivy Bridge architecture.

While the exact models of the Xeon chips that will be available have not been provided, Dell will allow for its workstations to be configured with various Xeon E3-1200 v2 CPUs which can be paired together with as much as 8GB of system memory running at 1600MHz, according to Dell Lab.

As far as graphics are concerned, Dell will have the AMD FirePro V4900 and the Nvidia Quadro 2000 available, both with 1GB of RAM.

The rest of the specs are pretty much unknown, outside of the fact that PSU options include a 275W and a 320W model.

The Xeon E3-1200 v2 family will include 11 CPU models, which will closely resemble the current E3-series chips based on the Sandy Bridge architecture, but will feature slightly improved operating frequencies and lower TDPs.

As some older reports have revealed, only one model out of the 11 processors to be launched will use a dual-core design, as the rest of the chips were built to include four computing cores.

This CPU however, which is dubbed the Xeon E3-1220L v2, is the only one to fit inside a 17 Watt thermal envelope as the others have TDPs ranging between 69W and 87W, with the exception of the Xeon E3-1265L v2 that is rated at 45W.

Right now, the release date of these Xeon chips is not yet known, but Intel reportedly plans to launch the first batch of Ivy Bridge CPUs on April 8.
