You can manipulate it like you would a tablet, though it can't lay flat

One might wonder why Dell didn't go that extra mile and allow the P2714T LCD touch-enabled monitor to lay totally flat on its back, but the answer lies in the nature of the product: in the end, the newcomer is a monitor, not a tablet.

Now, if it had been an all-in-one PC of some sort, it would have made sense for the stand to be able to somehow meld the back of the display and allow the newcomer to lie horizontally. But it is not an all-in-one.

Which means that, as a monitor, it will always sit on a desk somewhere, which means users will always be in front of them, and laying it flat would be counter-intuitive, since they'd have to bend over it if that was the case. Sure, it puts a damper on multi-user operation, but not a very big one since this is a 27-inch screen, not a 50-inch beast.

That said, the new LCD monitor with 10-point multitouch support and gesture recognition has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD as it were).

The response time isn't the best (8ms GTG), but it's not the worst we've seen either, and since this isn't a panel for fast games like FPSs, it's not a problem in the end.

Since we're on the subject of specifications, we may as well mention the brightness (250 cd/m2), the dynamic contrast ratio (DCR) of 8,000,000:1, and the viewing angles of 178/178 degrees (horizontal and vertical).

That leaves connectivity, and Dell did go that extra mile here. In addition to D-Sub and DiplayPort, it included two HDMI ports (with MHL, mobile high-definition link), two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 connectors.

For those unfamiliar with MHL, it is a technology that allows HDMI ports, VGA, USB and. or DisplayPorts to display, directly on the touch monitor, the content on smartphones and tablets. And we don't mean a window with the list of folders, but the actual content on the screen. Essentially, you delegate the display tasks from the phone's OLED/AMOLED/whatever to the LCD of the P2714T.

Sales of the Dell P2714T should have started, at least in Japan, for the sum of 69,980 Yen / $713 / €527.
