In theory wireless charging can be applied to larger devices such as laptops, but so far we have seen the technology being applied to smartphones and small framed tablets, like the Nexus 7.

But this standard might change soon enough, as the Alliance of Wireless Power has just announced Dell has jumped onboard as a member.

The PC maker is thus looking into bringing wireless charging to its line of laptops at some point into the future.

Chief of Technology Office at Dell, Glen Robson, said the company was excited to work with the Alliance of Wireless Power in order to develop a wireless charging system compatible with all kinds of devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Dell is the first major PC manufacturer to jump onboard with the Alliance that already has the support of major chip-maker Intel.

The Alliance is targeting 20 to 50 watt devices and most notebook and Ultrabook models fit into this range, so expect good things to come out of the “cartel" in the future.
