Dell has recently launched the Dell Download Store, the company's first software superstore, designed to allow consumers and small-and-medium businesses to easily download the most popular software titles and also manage volume software licensing requirements. According to the company, its new online store has been launched to ensure the quality of value, associated with some of its other products. With the launch, the Round Rock, Texas-based Dell is basically providing its customers with an alternative to Apple's already famous App Store.

“Downloading software, music or movies over the Internet is nothing new, but adding the volume software licensing capability for small-and-medium business customers is a big win,“ said Geoff Surkamer, general manager, Dell Global Digital Distribution. “In today’s environment, companies are looking everywhere to save money and increase efficiency. The Dell Download Store can help them do both.”

Some of the top titles come from 12 publishers, including Intuit, McAfee, Sonic/Roxio and Microsoft. The software store has been designed to allow users ease of access, with options for browsing by software, by brand or by type. There's also an option for some free software applications, under the free stuff category. One of the store's more interesting features allows users to access software titles purchased with select Dell computers. This option enables customers to save up to 10 percent or more per software title, according to Dell, as it eliminates packaging and shipping costs.

“Consumers are very accustomed to downloading music and movies online but many are still buying shrink-wrapped software,” Surkamer further stated. “Now they can buy the software they need at a lower cost and ultimately manage all their software, music and movies in one convenient location.”

Dell's new online Download Store is currently only available to U.S. users, while those in the United Kingdom, France and Germany will be able to take advantage of the company's new service as early as January 20, this year. Dell said that the store would be updated weekly with new software titles.
